On discovering that her husband, whom she has just joined in Marseille, is cheating on her, Carole leaves the marital home and is knocked down by a car. When she comes round in hospital, everyone takes her for Eva Sorrente, a stranger: Eva, a witness to a murder on the night of the accident, has swapped their papers. Forced into hiding, the two women discover that Carole's husband is wanted by the police, and travel as far as Portugal to find him.
